Skin grafting is a surgical process that involves separating the skin from one area of the body and moving, or reconstructing, it to another. If a part of your body has lost its preventive skin trying to cover due to burns, injury, or illness, this procedure is performed. At our Clinic skin grafts are performed. The majority of skin grafts are performed under general anesthesia, which means you will be asleep throughout the process and will not feel any pain.
The procedure will begin with a surgeon expelling skin from the donor site. If you have a split-thickness graft, the skin will be erased from an area of your body that is normally concealed by clothing, such as your hip or the outdoors of your thigh. If you need a full-thickness graft, the stomach, groin, forearm, or area just above the clavicle are the best donor sites (collarbone). Once the skin from the donor site has been removed, the surgeon will carefully place it over the transfusion area and secure it with medical applications, staples, or sutures. It may be "meshed" if it is a separated graft.
